I Am Here Because I Care About You, 2023

Location: Baruch Drive at Baruch Houses/NYCHA, Lower East Side, New York

This exhibition is produced by ArtBridge in partnership with the Baruch Resident Association. It is supported by the Office of Assembly Member Harvey Epstein and Abrons Art Center, and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It is made possible by City Artist Corps and the City Canvas pilot program – initiatives of the Mayor’s Office and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

The concept follows the desire to embellish our community's working-class citizen's habitat. The twelve panels are reminiscent of the sunrises and sunsets of our city, aiming to portray someone's entire journey. The only way we could succeed with the idea was by highlighting the beauty already around us. We photographed local flowers and transformed them into giant digital paintings.

The work evokes migration and a merge of cultural elements from our native country and our adopted one. The paintings are carefully layered with three main subjects. In the background, gradients of which tones are intricately blended, simulating colorful sunset skies. The next is a continuous floral pattern inspired by native orchids from Venezuela floating or dancing around the surface as clouds that are moved by the wind. In the foreground are close-ups of local New York City flowers. Photography-based, these flowers are digitally rendered by hours of painting, altering, and enhancing their natural appearance.
